In January 2012, a group of emergency management, services, and business personnel active in Indian Country convened to discuss the creation of a National Tribal organization. Collectively, the group decided there was a need to reach out to all of Indian Country in order to ask if support for a National Tribal Association was a need, and if it would be supported by Tribal Nations. It was also decided to use this outreach as an opportunity to take a snapshot of emergency management and emergency services capabilities throughout Indian Country. Two months later, a survey was sent to representatives of the 566 Federally recognized tribes. The overwhelming support of a National Tribal Association received via survey answers received from 95 tribes, or 17% of all of Indian Country has resulted in the creation of iTEMA.
