iTEMA - Free Listos California Amateur Radio Training in December

iTEMALogo_FINAL1

We at iTEMA have just solidified our plans for Listos California related outreach to the Amateur Radio Community in December.

As you may be aware, Listos California was announced last year by Governor Newsom, striving to boost disaster preparedness by engaging a statewide network of community-based organizations and management teams to ensure the state’s most vulnerable communities are ready when disaster strikes.

iTEMA, a 501(c)3 not for profit national Tribal emergency management association, is one of the grantees for the Listos California program, iTEMA has been funded to provide personal and family preparedness awareness training and community preparedness training through three different grants. One of the grants focuses on Native American Tribes and rural areas throughout California, while the other two grants focus iTEMA’s efforts toward two counties – Shasta County and Tulare County.

Originally, the trainings that iTEMA planned were all in-person deliveries, bringing the training to Tribes, communities, and organizations throughout California. Because of the impacts of COVID this year, iTEMA has changed all of the expected in-person sessions to on-line presentations, through video teleconferences. iTEMA has been extremely successful with our Listos California campaign so far, including reaching over 650,000 Californians through a series of pre-Covid in-person deliveries, awareness level video teleconferences discussions, and specific deliveries to at risk communities and businesses, throughout California.

As iTEMA has some specific Listos related training requirements in Shasta and Tulare Counties, I feel that collaboration between the Amateur Radio community and iTEMA would benefit all parties involved. The grant has already paid for the program, instructors, and video teleconferencing, so there would be no cost to the participants. The outreach activities would occur in December 2020, ending by 31DEC20.

We would welcome California Amateur Radio operators to join in on our Listos California activities.

Through a series of video conference calls in December, the focus of the Listos California outreach to the Amateur Radio community would be to:

  • Share the Listos California personal and family preparedness message
  • Share awareness of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training opportunities, including teleconference based and self-paced CERT training
  • Conduct an Amateur Radio centric tabletop exercise via video teleconference specific to Shasta and Tulare counties (two teleconferences), related to the disaster threats to these communities
  • Increase the awareness and knowledge of the Amateur Radio capabilities that already exist in those counties

I have added the iTEMA Amateur Radio Outreach schedule for you, below. I have also added some links to the bottom of this email that can provide additional information about Listos California and iTEMA.

I would appreciate your assistance getting the word out to the Amateur Radio Community in your area.

Thank you and 73,

Sid

Here is the latest on the Listos California training sessions that we have planned for the Amateur Radio community in December. We have expanded the number of sessions, trying to make it more convenient for participants, knowing that the sessions are coming up quickly. Our plan includes:

Listos California Personal and Family Preparedness Presentations – 4 sessions open to all Amateur Radio Operators

Listos California Virtual Disaster Tabletop Exercise – 2 sessions open to all Amateur Radio Operators

Listos California Personal and Family Preparedness Presentations

We ask that Amateurs and their families join us for at least one of these 45 minute Listos California Presentations. These sessions will be hosted by Jake Heflin, KM6HQZ, who is a Firefighter/Paramedic/Public Information Officer and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program Manager at the Long Beach Fire Department. I have other emergency managers who will also be part of the instructional team for these calls, including myself.

During each session, we will cover the Listos California Program, including the 5 Points of Preparedness information. Although we are focusing our attention towards the Amateur Radio operators, all are welcome, including family members. There will be time for questions and discussion, after the presentations.

You do not need to have an Amateur Radio license to participate. Each of these sessions will have the same content.

For each of these sessions, the instructional cadre from iTEMA will focus on the specific hazards, threats, and disaster scenarios that could impact California, specifically our focus counties of Shasta and Tulare Counties.

There are no prerequisites for participation in these sessions. We want to include everyone who has interest, including people who are just getting their start in Amateur Radio and/or emergency management.

You do not need to have an Amateur Radio license to participate.

We have allotted 2 hours to run through the scenarios, have emergency management related discussions, and to answer questions from the participants.
